This is Pakistani activist Gulalai Ismail, whose group called Aware Girls promotes women’s rights and peace.
Gulalai and Aware Girls have faced a campaign of defamation accusing Gulalai of “blasphemy” and the organization of undertaking “immoral” activities. Her organisation has been subject to much government interference and attempts to shut it down.
Urging people to think critically and respect human rights should not lead to a fine or jail time. Blasphemy is a victimless crime.
Gulalai Ismail will be speaking at a public meeting to promote the removal of blasphemy from Ireland’s laws. This will take place in Buswell’s Hotel, Dublin on the 13th October at 3 pm.
The image is of Eamon DeValera, former president (1959-1973) and prime minister (1957-1959) of Ireland, genuflecting before the Catholic Archbishop McQuaid, who, according to Wikipedia, is “known for the unusual amount of influence he had over successive governments”.
Yesterday was the launch of the Atheist Ireland campaign to remove the blasphemy law from the Irish constitution.
Here are Five Reasons To Vote Yes in the referendum on 26th October.
Here is an open letter from 24 victims of blasphemy laws worldwide asking for a Yes vote.
Hello. My name is Willy Toledo. I am a paladin.
I am a mixture of wizard and brawler.
Willy Toledo is a Spanish actor. In July of last year, he posted the following on his Facebook page in response to a blasphemy trial:
“I shit on God and have enough shit left over to shit on the dogma of the holiness and virginity of the Virgin Mary. This country is unbearably shameful. I’m disgusted. Go fuck yourselves.”
He was arrested in Madrid yesterday to face blasphemy charges himself, and he has not been allowed to speak with his lawyer, which his lawyer claims is “unheard of”.
Blasphemy is literally a victimless crime.
Despite the clearly superior #HolyToledo, his supporters are using the hashtag #IShitOnGod, or just shouting it in the street.
This is Meiliana. She lives in northern Sumatra in Indonesia. Two days ago, after a two-year-long legal process, she was sentenced to 18 months in jail for blasphemy for complaining that a mosque’s speakers were too loud. This is ludicrous.
Mobs burned and ransacked at least 14 Buddhist temples throughout Tanjung Balai in a July 2016 riot after reports of Meiliana’s complaints emerged.
This comes after Jakarta’s governor, called Ahok, was convicted of blasphemy in May of last year (also in Indonesia).
Blasphemy is literally a victimless crime. It should not be on the books anywhere. #FreeMeiliana
I just want everyone who doesnt live in michigan to know that I find it blasphemous to start school in august.
Labor day hasnt even came yet, guys?
Like Bangladesh, Indonesia is a previously more tolerant country which has recently become more dangerous for atheists.
According to Indonesia’s blasphemy law, it is illegal to spread atheism or criticize one of its official religions. Since atheism isn’t officially recognized, and Indonesian law requires all Indonesian citizens to be classified into one of the officially recognized religions, atheists are legally required to lie about their atheism.
Last month, the government of Mauritania made the death sentence mandatory for apostasy (giving up Islam) and blasphemy.
At the moment, a blogger called Mohamed Cheikh Ould Mkhaitir is currently in jail for writing an article critical of Muhammad and Mauritania’s caste system. He was originally sentenced to death, but that was commuted to two years, already served, but he remains incarcerated.
How weak is the prophet of the Islamic god of the Mauritanians that he can’t handle any sort of criticism? How powerless is the Islamic god of the Mauritanians if he needs you to do his killing for him?
This is a screenshot from an ad by Meat and Livestock Australia which features lots of different gods who agree that they can all enjoy lamb. Presumably the joke is due to the traditional aversion of Muslims to pork, Hindus to beef, and Jews to lots of things.
It was regarded as offensive by lots of people for fairly predictable reasons, but less predictable was the decision of the Australia’s Advertising Standards Board to ban the ad.
Enacting legislation of any kind based on people’s feelings (especially feelings based on nothing they can demonstrate) will always be a bad idea. Blasphemy is literally a victimless crime.
Atheism and blasphemy can get you killed or imprisoned in some parts of the world.
This cartoon was posted in The Jakarta Post in 2014, which led to charges of blasphemy against the editor, which were subsequently dropped.
Yesterday, the governor of Jakarta, “Ahok”, was sentenced to two years in prison for blasphemy.
While Indonesia has built a reputation as a tolerant, diverse nation, experts say Ahok’s conviction is the latest example of the country’s growing conservatism. Recent years have seen large anti-LGBT protests in Jakarta in early 2016, a push to criminalize homosexual sex and passionate reactions to allegations of blasphemy. Ahok’s case is seen as a reaction of the government to Muslim street protests to have him arrested.
Blasphemy is literally a victimless crime and needs to be removed from every criminal justice system in every country.
