“Science built the academy, superstition the Inquisition.”
– Robert G. Ingersoll
Australia’s Catholic church is threatening to fire teachers, nurses and other employees who marry their same-sex partner if gay marriage is legalised, in a dramatic move led by the country’s most senior Catholic.
Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart, speaking exclusively to Fairfax Media, pointedly warned the church’s 180,000 employees they were expected to uphold its teachings “totally”, and defiance would be treated “very seriously”.
The assumptions are really bothering me. I get it, you believe in a god(or multiple) and that is fine, but please stop assuming everyone else does too.
When you see a post about someone struggling and you don’t know their religion please try to refrain from religious comments. I get that you’re just trying to be kind, and I’m not trying to attack you for it, but its not helpful to someone who isn’t religious.
Why do you say “God is on your side” instead of “you’ll get through this”?
Why do you say “God will keep you strong” instead of “You are strong and you’ll be okay”?
Even if you believe that a god is the one doing it for them its just respectful to leave your religion out of comfort that is for them (Unless you know that they too share similar beliefs, that is totally different).
This isn’t just for atheists, its for atheists, agnostics, deists, polytheists, and anyone else who doesn’t share similar beliefs.
It’s about respecting other people.
Support doesn’t have to be theistic–
Lay blame where it belongs.
“The Catholic Church is more concerned about preventing contraception than preventing child rape; it’s more concerned about preventing gay marriage than genocide. This is a real inversion of priorities that completely falsifies any discussion of morality in the Church.”
– Sam Harris
My support for separation of church and state is not just for the atheists, agnostics, humanists, or any of the “nones” (as were so kindly refered to as).
I don’t just fight specific religions being taught as truth in schools for only myself or just for the people(though Im sure it helps my drive), I also do it for people of other religions.
I fight for religious freedom in schools, government, and anything that is not personal/private for everyone.
So no one is forced to do the prayers of a religion they don’t follow.
So no one is forced to follow the rules of a religion they don’t follow.
So no one is discriminated against or wrongly treated based on the beliefs of a religion they have nothing to do with.
I tell you one thing, Christians aren’t wrong when they say Christianity is their right. But a Jews right is to be Jewish. An atheists right is to be atheist.
Feedom of religion is for everyone, I dont know why so many theists fight it.
“The essence of Christianity is told us in the Garden of Eden history. The fruit that was forbidden was on the tree of knowledge. The subtext is, all the suffering you have is because you wanted to find out what was going on.”
– Frank Zappa
“If holy books are mistaken in telling us where we came from, how can we trust it to tell us where we’re going?”
“Man created God in his image: intolerant, sexist, homophobic and violent.”
– George Weinberg
